In Conversation: Curators and Artists

A series of discussions based on the exhibition Cinco y Cinco/Five and Five. Featuring ten contemporary artists from the U.S., Mexico, and Latin America, the exhibition explores connections, commonalities, and differences in the artists' values, art practices and visual sensibilities, revealing diverse histories, intellectual discourses, and modes of self-representation.

Elena Duran is a Chicana flutist who grew up in Oakland's Fruitvale District and later attended Mills College. She is one of the world's top instrumentalists and has recorded and performed with Paul McCartney, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, among others. Duran developed a program called "Flautas Sin Fronteras" with the goal of bringing concerts to the U.S.-Mexico border for communities with limited exposure to classical music.
